I would probably vote somewhere between guilty and not guilty. The feature itself is neutral, and the person reading still brings their own meaning to it, but the person using it also knows that hearing your own name can make something feel more personal than it really is. Once you know that effect exists, I think you carry at least some responsibility for how you use it.
Patrick-san, I used this feature rather casually at first, without giving it much thought, because personalized name insertion has been common in email newsletters for a long time.
Then I realized that, for most of my readers, it apparently wasn’t a familiar feature at all.
So I wrote an article explaining this feature, along with several other Substack features. After that, I also posted a Note to a wider audience, warning people about how this feature could be perceived and used.
And now, after doing all of that, I’ve deliberately put myself here in the position of being judged.
I think your opinion is fair and sincere. Thank you very much for taking the time to leave this comment.
What I genuinely wanted from this was to hear different perspectives, so I’m truly grateful that you shared yours.
Thank you for explaining the context so openly. What stands out to me is that once you realized readers might experience the feature differently than you intended, you did not simply defend it. You explained it, warned others about the possible effect, and invited criticism. That willingness to reconsider how something lands feels just as important as the feature itself.
Patrick-san, thank you for taking the time to engage with me.
Yes, I felt that I was probably in a position where I should do those things, so I acted on that responsibility.
And if there are still people who were left feeling hurt or uncomfortable because of what I did, then perhaps being told “guilty” here might, in some strange way, bring a little relief to me as well.
I understand what you mean. Sometimes accepting that something may have affected people differently than we intended can feel more honest than trying to prove we did nothing wrong. What matters to me is that you noticed the possibility, took responsibility for it, and changed how you approached it afterward.
